كونمينغ (昆明)

Kunming is called the Spring City for good reason — temperatures hover around 15-25°C almost every day of the year. It's the perfect base for exploring Yunnan's incredible diversity.

Stone Forest (Shilin)

A UNESCO site about 90 minutes from Kunming. Thousands of limestone karsts rise from the ground like a petrified forest — it looks like another planet. The Yi minority people consider it sacred. Allow a full day for the trip. Go early to beat the crowds and the heat.

Dianchi Lake

Yunnan's largest lake, stretching along the southern edge of Kunming. Walk the lakeside promenade, visit the 600-year-old Yunnan Nationalities Village on the shore, or take a cable car up Western Hills for a panoramic view of the lake and city.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces

About 6 hours south of Kunming, the Hani people have carved rice terraces into the mountains for over 1,200 years. The reflections at sunrise — especially during November to April when the terraces are flooded — are among the most beautiful things you'll see in China. Best visited as a 2-day trip from Kunming.

Yunnan Cuisine

Yunnan's food is unlike anything else in China — influenced by its ethnic minorities, tropical climate, and borders with Southeast Asia. Cross-bridge noodles (guoqiao mixian) is the signature dish: a bowl of boiling broth served with raw ingredients that you cook at the table. Steam pot chicken (qiguo ji) is another classic — chicken steamed for hours in a special clay pot with herbs.
