China Packing Tips — FAQ
Packing for China depends on the season, your destinations, and travel style. From the humid summers of Shanghai to the dry cold of Beijing winter, this checklist adapts to your specific trip. Download or print your personalised list and check off each item as you pack.
What should I pack for China in summer?
Pack light, breathable fabrics (cotton/linen), sunscreen SPF50+, mosquito repellent, a compact umbrella for sudden rain, and comfortable walking shoes. Air conditioning is common but can be strong — carry a light scarf or shawl for indoor spaces. Stay hydrated and carry a reusable water bottle.
What documents do I need for China travel?
A valid passport with at least 6 months validity, your visa or entry permit, travel insurance documents, printed hotel confirmations, and a few passport photos. Keep digital copies on your phone and email them to yourself as backup.
Do I need a VPN for internet access in China?
Yes, if you want to use Google, Gmail, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, or X/Twitter. Install and test your VPN before you leave China — many VPN websites are blocked inside the country. eSIMs with roaming data can bypass some restrictions.
What should I pack for winter in northern China?
Beijing and Harbin can drop to -15°C or lower. Pack thermal underwear, a heavy down jacket, wool sweater, scarf, hat, gloves, and insulated boots. Indoor heating (暖气) is excellent, so dress in layers you can remove indoors. Lip balm and moisturiser are essential for the dry air.
