Yangtze River Cruise Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know

"Which is better — a Yangtze cruise or a high-speed train through the gorges?"

This is the question I get from every client who visits Chongqing. And my answer is always the same: they're completely different experiences. The high-speed train gives you a glimpse. The cruise gives you three days of immersion in one of the world's most dramatic landscapes.

I was born in Chongqing, at the gateway to the Yangtze River. I've taken the cruise at least a dozen times, with family, with clients, and alone. It never gets old.

This guide covers everything you need to know: the best ships, the cabins worth paying for, what you'll see, and the one mistake every first-timer makes.

The Classic Route: Chongqing to Yichang

The standard Yangtze cruise runs downstream from Chongqing to Yichang (3 days, 2 nights) or upstream from Yichang to Chongqing (4 days, 3 nights).

Downstream is faster — the ship moves with the current. You cover the Three Gorges during daylight hours on day 2, which is the highlight. Upstream is more laid-back — the ship moves against the current, so you get more time to relax and enjoy the ship amenities.

My recommendation: Take the downstream route (Chongqing to Yichang). It's shorter, cheaper, and the gorge scenery is timed perfectly for daylight viewing.

Best Cruise Ships (2026)

Yangtze cruise ships fall into three tiers:

Premium (¥3000-6000/person)

Luxury (¥6000-12,000/person)

Budget (¥1500-3000/person)

Older ships (built 2000-2010) still operate but with less luxury. They're fine if you just want the scenery. Check recent reviews — some are well-maintained, others are tired.

Cabins: Which One to Book

Standard cabin (标准间). ¥1500-4000. Two single beds, small bathroom, private balcony. Fine for most travellers. Book on the upper decks (3-5) for better views.

Executive suite (行政套房). ¥4000-8000. Larger room, separate living area, better bathroom, priority boarding. Worth it if you value space.

President suite (总统套房). ¥8000-15,000. The best cabin on the ship. Huge room, panoramic windows, butler service. Reserve well in advance.

Pro tip: Every cabin in premium and above has a private balcony. Spend the extra ¥500-1000 if the standard option doesn't have one. The gorge scenery is best enjoyed from your own balcony, not the crowded deck.

What You'll See (Day by Day)

Day 1: Chongqing Departure

The ship departs from Chaotianmen Dock (朝天门码头) in central Chongqing around 9pm. Before departure, walk around the dock area — the view of Chongqing's skyline lit up at night is breathtaking.

Day 2: The Three Gorges (The Main Event)

This is the day you came for. You'll pass through all three gorges:

Qutang Gorge (瞿塘峡) — The shortest (8km) and narrowest gorge. The cliffs rise almost vertically from the river. Look for the "Kui Gate" (夔门) — the iconic Yangtze photo that's on the ¥10 note.

Wu Gorge (巫峡) — 45km of stunning peaks, often shrouded in mist. The Twelve Peaks of Wu Gorge are legendary. Keep your camera ready — every bend reveals a new view.

Xiling Gorge (西陵峡) — The longest (75km) and most turbulent gorge. This is where the old Yangtze was most dangerous for boat traffic, before the Three Gorges Dam tamed the river.

Optional excursion (¥200-300): The Shennong Stream (神农溪) or Little Three Gorges (小三峡) — a smaller tributary with even more dramatic scenery. Highly recommended if you have the energy.

Day 3: Three Gorges Dam & Arrival in Yichang

Morning visit to the Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝) — the world's largest hydroelectric project. The scale is staggering. You'll visit the observation deck and see the ship lift.

Then the cruise ends at Yichang (宜昌). From Yichang, you can:

Best time: October-November. The autumn colours on the gorges are spectacular, the weather is perfect, and the skies are clearest.

Practical Tips

Pack light. Cabins are comfortable but not spacious. One carry-on suitcase is enough for a 3-4 day cruise.

Bring binoculars. Wildlife spotting (monkeys, eagles) is common in the gorges. Binoculars make the experience much better.

The food is Chinese-style buffet. Three meals a day are included. The quality varies by ship — premium ships have excellent food, budget ships are basic. Bring snacks if you're a picky eater.

Sea sickness is NOT a problem. The Yangtze is a river, not the open sea. The water is calm, and the ship is stable.

Book through a travel agent. Cruise companies sell directly but agents often get better rates. Trip.com and Ctrip are reliable online options. I can also book for my clients with preferred pricing.

Don't skip the shore excursions. The included excursions (Three Gorges Dam, Shennong Stream) are worth doing. The optional ones (¥200-300) like the Little Three Gorges are even better.

The Most Common Mistake

Booking the cheapest cabin on the lowest deck. The view from lower decks is partially blocked by the railing. Pay a little more for a higher deck or a guaranteed balcony cabin. The whole point of a Yangtze cruise is the scenery — don't save ¥500 and regret it for three days.

Is a Yangtze Cruise Worth It?

Yes. Unequivocally.

I've done the cruise a dozen times and it still moves me. There's something about floating through a landscape that's inspired Chinese poets for 2,000 years — Li Bai, Du Fu, and countless others wrote their best work on this river. You'll understand why when you see it.

The Three Gorges Dam changed the river forever, but it didn't diminish its beauty. In some ways, it made it more accessible. The water is calmer, the ships are safer, and the scenery is just as spectacular.
