تشانغيه (张掖)

Zhangye sits on the ancient Silk Road in Gansu Province, but the real draw isn't history — it's geology. The Zhangye Danxia National Geopark is one of the most visually stunning landscapes on earth.

Rainbow Mountains (Zhangye Danxia)

The star attraction. Layer upon layer of red, orange, yellow, green, and purple mineral deposits create striped mountains that look like a giant abstract painting. The colours are most vivid after rain. There are several viewing platforms connected by shuttle buses — hop on and off at each one. The north gate (main entrance) has the best access to the colour zones.

Giant Buddha Temple

China's largest indoor reclining Buddha — a 34-metre-long clay statue with a serene expression, housed in a Song Dynasty temple. The temple complex also includes a Tibetan Buddhist pagoda and a small museum. It survived the Cultural Revolution intact because local villagers hid it behind a brick wall.

Mati Temple (Horse Hoof Temple)

A unique grotto temple complex carved into a cliff face, combining Han Chinese, Tibetan, and Mongol Buddhist art. The name comes from a legendary horse hoof print left in the rock by a heavenly horse. The views over the grasslands from the top are spectacular.

Sunan Grasslands

South of Zhangye, the landscape opens into vast Tibetan grasslands dotted with yaks and nomadic herders' tents. A great day trip for hiking or horseback riding.
