Traditional Chinese Medicine Travel Guide: Where to Experience TCM in China

May 30, 20269 min

I'm a firm believer in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I treat my own children with it — herbal remedies, dietary therapy, tuina massage — and they've never been to a hospital or taken a single pill.

But I didn't always feel this way. I grew up with TCM as a normal part of life in China — my grandmother used to take me to a TCM pharmacy in our neighbourhood whenever I had a cold. The smell hit you before you walked through the door: dried herbs, wood drawers, something earthy I still can't name. The pharmacist would feel my pulse, look at my tongue, and start pulling herbs from different drawers — goji berries, licorice root, something that looked like dried tree bark. He'd wrap everything in brown paper and tell my grandmother how to boil it. I hated the taste. I kept hating it into my twenties. But it worked every single time.

It wasn't until I became a mother that I truly understood its power.

This guide is for travelers who are curious about TCM — whether you want to try a single acupuncture session, explore herbal medicine, or build an entire trip around wellness.

First: What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system that's been practised for over 2,000 years. It's not "alternative medicine" in China — it's integrated into the national healthcare system, alongside Western medicine.

The core idea: your body has a vital energy called **Qi (气)** that flows through pathways called **meridians**. When Qi flows freely, you're healthy. When it's blocked or unbalanced, you get sick. TCM treatments aim to restore that balance.

The main branches you'll encounter:

TreatmentWhat It IsBest For
**Acupuncture (针灸)**Thin needles inserted at specific pointsPain, stress, insomnia, digestion
**Cupping (拔罐)**Glass cups create suction on your skinMuscle pain, colds, detox
**Tuina Massage (推拿)**Deep tissue massage along meridiansNeck/back pain, sports injuries
**Moxibustion (艾灸)**Burning mugwort near acupuncture pointsCold conditions, fatigue, digestion
**Herbal Medicine (中药)**Custom herb formulas prescribed by a TCM doctorChronic conditions, prevention

Where to Experience TCM in China

Beijing — The Classics

Beijing has some of China's oldest and most respected TCM hospitals. The **Beijing University of Chinese Medicine** affiliated hospitals have international departments where English is spoken.

Try: A full body checkup using TCM diagnostic methods — pulse reading, tongue examination, and a custom herbal formula. Cost: ¥200–500 ($28–70).

Chengdu — TCM + Food

Chengdu is famous for its food, but it's also a TCM powerhouse. The **Chengdu University of TCM** is one of the oldest in China. Many local restaurants actually use TCM principles in their cooking — herbal broths, medicinal ingredients in hotpot.

Don't miss: A Sichuan-style herbal foot bath after a long day of walking. It's cheap (¥30–60), incredibly relaxing, and a local tradition.

Nanjing — The New TCM Tourism Hub

In 2025-2026, Nanjing has become a major destination for TCM tourism. The **Jiangsu Provincial TCM Hospital** (Qixia campus) offers dedicated international services — English-speaking doctors, TCM diagnostics, acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal foot baths, and tea therapy.

Try: The full "TCM wellness package" — consultation + acupuncture + herbal tea. Many international visitors are combining this with tourism in Nanjing's historic sites.

Sanya (Hainan) — TCM Resort Style

Sanya has positioned itself as a TCM wellness resort destination. The **Sanya TCM Hospital** has treated over 100,000 overseas patients from 40+ countries. Many hotels offer TCM spa treatments — think acupuncture with an ocean view.

Best for: Combining TCM treatment with an actual beach vacation.

Shanghai — Medical Tourism Gateway

Shanghai's international hospitals offer the full spectrum — from TCM consultations to complex Western medical procedures. The **Shuguang Hospital** affiliated with Shanghai University of TCM has a well-regarded international clinic.

Yangshuo — TCM + Nature

The karst mountains of Yangshuo aren't just beautiful — they're also home to several wellness retreats that combine TCM treatments with yoga, meditation, and hiking. A unique way to experience both Chinese medicine and China's natural beauty.

The "New Three-Piece Set" — What's Trending in 2026

A viral trend on TikTok and Xiaohongshu has travellers coming to China for three specific things:

1. **TCM therapies** — Acupuncture, cupping, tuina, moxibustion

2. **Dental care** — Professional cleaning for as little as $15

3. **Eyeglasses** — Custom prescription lenses for $30–$70

Yes, people are literally coming to China for a dental cleaning and a pair of glasses, then staying for the TCM treatment. The combination of low cost, high quality, and zero wait times is hard to beat anywhere in the world.

What It Costs

ServicePrice (CNY)Price (USD)
TCM consultation¥70–200$10–28
Acupuncture session¥80–180$11–25
Cupping treatment¥60–150$8–21
Tuina massage (60 min)¥120–300$17–42
Custom herbal formula (7 days)¥100–300$14–42
Dental cleaning¥100–200$14–28
Prescription glasses (full set)¥200–500$28–70

A Personal Note

I've seen TCM change lives — including my own children's. When my daughter had a persistent cough that wouldn't go away, Western medicine gave us antibiotics that only helped temporarily. A TCM doctor prescribed a gentle herbal formula and dietary adjustments. Three days later, the cough was gone.

This isn't a rejection of Western medicine — it's just a recognition that TCM offers something different. A different way of understanding the body. A different approach to healing. And for travellers, a different way of experiencing China.
