Great Wall Hiking Adventure

Escape the crowds. I know sections of the Wall where you can walk for hours with just the wind and the history.

BeijingFull day

Most visitors see the Great Wall at Badaling, shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of others. I take you somewhere else entirely.

The Experience

I lead small groups (max 8 people) to unrestored sections of the Wall that most tourists never see. Mutianyu is my go-to for first-timers — it's beautifully restored but much quieter than Badaling. For experienced hikers, I recommend the Jiankou–Mutianyu traverse: a challenging but safe hike along a wild, unrestored section.

What to Expect

  • Pickup: 6:00–6:30am from your Beijing hotel
  • Drive: ~1.5 hours to the Wall
  • Hike: 3–5 hours depending on the route
  • Lunch: A picnic on the Wall with views that will ruin you for any other meal
  • What to Bring

  • Good hiking shoes (the steps are uneven)
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • At least 1.5 litres of water
  • A light jacket (it's cooler on the Wall, even in summer)
  • Why Go With Me?

I've hiked every section of the Wall within 200km of Beijing. I know where the crowds go and where they don't. I also know the best times to be at specific spots for light, temperature, and atmosphere.
