Shanghai & Hangzhou City Break

Bund sunset walks, hidden speakeasies, tea plantations, and ancient water towns.

Shanghai / Hangzhou3–5 days

This is the perfect combination: Shanghai's electric energy paired with Hangzhou's serene beauty. The two cities are 45 minutes apart by high-speed train.

Day 1–2: Shanghai

  • Bund sunset walk — the classic view, best experienced with a cocktail in hand at Bar Rouge
  • French Concession wandering — Wukang Road, Anfu Road, the old lane houses
  • Hidden speakeasies — I'll take you to bars that don't have signs out front
  • Food crawl — soup dumplings at Jia Jia Tang Bao, shengjian at Yang's Fry Dumplings, dinner on Yunnan Road
  • Day 3–4: Hangzhou

  • West Lake — Rent a bike and ride the full loop. Stop at the tea houses on the north shore
  • Longjing Tea Plantation — Walk through the terraced fields and taste the real Dragon Well tea
  • Lingyin Temple — One of China's most important Buddhist temples, set in a forest of ancient trees
  • Water town day trip — Wuzhen or Xitang, an hour from Hangzhou
  • Logistics

The high-speed train between Shanghai and Hangzhou runs every 15 minutes. Tickets are about ¥75 in second class.
