Zhangjiajie Photography Tour

The towering sandstone pillars that inspired Avatar. Best at sunrise when the mist rolls in.

Zhangjiajie2–3 days

Zhangjiajie's sandstone pillars are a photographer's dream. On this tour, I take you to the best spots at the best times — no guesswork involved.

Day 1: National Forest Park

  • Sunrise at Yuanjiajie — the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint, empty at dawn
  • Bailong Elevator up, walk the ridge lines, elevator down
  • Golden Whip Stream — a 7km valley walk with crystal-clear water and 360-degree pillar views
  • Sunset at Huangshi Village — the classic panoramic view
  • Day 2: Tianmen Mountain (optional Day 3)

  • Cable car ride — 30 minutes, 7km, the world's longest
  • Heaven's Gate — the natural arch, reached by climbing 999 steps
  • Glass cliff walk — 60 metres above the ground, not for the faint of heart
  • Gear Recommendations

  • Wide-angle lens (16-24mm) for the pillars
  • Polarizing filter to cut through haze
  • Tripod for golden hour shots
  • Comfortable hiking shoes — there are lots of stairs
  • Best Times

April–June for mist and moody shots. September–November for clear skies and golden light. Avoid Chinese public holidays when the park is packed.
