When to Book for the Best Price
- Book 6–8 weeks ahead for the best balance of price and availability.
- Avoid Chinese holidays: Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb), Golden Week (Oct 1–7), and Labour Day (May 1–5) see massive price surges.
- Tuesday and Wednesday are historically the cheapest days to fly to China from SEA.
- Set price alerts on Google Flights or Skyscanner. China routes from SEA have frequent sales.
- Consider flying to Kunming as a cheaper entry point. It is often significantly cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai.
My Personal Advice on Routes
If you are a first-time visitor from SEA, I usually recommend flying into Guangzhou first. It is the shortest flight from all three countries, the airport is well-connected, and it is a great launching point for exploring southern China.
For backpackers on a budget, Kunming is your best entry point. Cheap flights from KL and Jakarta, and from Kunming you can take trains to Dali, Lijiang, Chengdu, and beyond.
If you are on a tight schedule (7–10 days), fly directly to your main destination — do not waste a day transiting. Singapore to Beijing is 6 hours direct. KL to Shanghai is 5.5 hours.
My honest take: SEA to China is one of the best-connected international routes in Asia. You almost never need a layover unless you are going to a very specific secondary city.
