Guilin (桂林)

The landscape that inspired Chinese paintings — rice paddies and karst mountains

Guilin's landscape — those jagged limestone karsts rising from mist — is the one you've seen in Chinese paintings since childhood. I've been here half a dozen times, and every single time I step off the train and see those peaks, I stop and stare. It never gets old. Neither does grabbing a bowl of rice noodles at 7am from a shop with plastic stools and no English sign. My kids saw a photo of these mountains and asked if they were real. They're still not convinced.

China's most iconic landscape — limestone karst peaks rising from the Li River, ancient caves, and the breathtaking Longji Rice Terraces.

Guilin's landscape is the most famous in China — and for good reason. The limestone karst peaks that rise from the Li River valley have inspired poets, artists, and travellers for over a thousand years.

Li River Cruise

The 4-hour cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of the most beautiful boat journeys in the world. The river winds through a landscape of sheer karst peaks, bamboo groves, and water buffalo cooling off in the shallows. The stretch between Yangdi and Xingping is the most scenic — this is the image printed on the ¥20 note. Sit on the top deck for uninterrupted views.

Elephant Trunk Hill

Guilin's mascot — a hill that looks exactly like an elephant drinking from the Li River with its trunk. It's a quick visit (30 minutes) but the photos are essential. Go in the morning when the light is best.

Reed Flute Cave

A spectacular limestone cave filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and coloured lighting that transforms the rock formations into otherworldly shapes. It's touristy but genuinely impressive — the scale of the main chamber is cathedral-like.

Longji Rice Terraces (Dragon's Backbone)

About 2 hours from Guilin, these are among the most impressive rice terraces in China. Built into steep mountain slopes by the Yao and Zhuang minority groups over 600 years, they look like a dragon's scales from above. Best visited in May–June (flooded with water and reflecting the sky) or September–October (golden before harvest).

Yangshuo Countryside

While technically a separate town, Yangshuo is the natural extension of any Guilin trip. The countryside around Yangshuo — accessible by bicycle or e-bike — offers the iconic karst landscape at its most intimate. Cycle through rice paddies, past small villages, with karst peaks on every side.

Rock Climbing

Guilin and Yangshuo are among China's top rock climbing destinations. The limestone karsts offer hundreds of bolted routes ranging from beginner to expert. Moon Hill is the most famous climbing spot — a natural arch that's visible for miles.

Food

Guilin's food is defined by its famous rice noodles (guilin mifen) — a breakfast staple of silky rice noodles in bone broth with beef, peanuts, pickled beans, and chilli oil. Other local specialities include beer fish (Yangshuo), stuffed river snails, and Guilin Sanhua wine.

What Travelers Say About Guilin

“

I'm a vegetarian and was terrified about food in China. Peng put together a custom food guide for every city I visited — marked restaurants on a map, taught me how to say 'no meat' properly, and even found Buddhist vegetarian restaurants I never would have discovered.

We took Peng's recommended Guilin-Yangshoo itinerary and it was perfect. The Li River cruise, the rice terraces, cycling through the countryside — every day was a highlight. She booked a hotel with a view of the karst mountains that I'll never forget.
