I get this question a lot: "Peng, should I go to China or India for medical treatment?" And it's a fair question. Both countries offer massive cost savings compared to the West. Both have world-class hospitals. But they're very different in what they offer and who they're best for.

I've spent years in China's healthcare system and visited hospitals across the country. I've also spoken with dozens of patients who've experienced both systems. Here's what I've learned, as honestly as I can present it.

Where India Wins

Language, clearly. This is the single biggest difference. Indian doctors are typically trained in English, use English medical textbooks, and present at international conferences in English. For complex medical decisions where every word matters, that's a real advantage. Chinese doctors at top hospitals increasingly speak English, but it's not universal.

Established ecosystem. India's medical tourism infrastructure has been built over 30+ years. Hospitals like Apollo, Fortis, and Max have dedicated international departments, airport pickup, accommodation booking, and post-discharge follow-up as standard offerings. China is still building this infrastructure.
Lower costs for most procedures. India is consistently 10–30% cheaper than China for the same procedures. Knee replacement: $6,600 in India vs $8,300 in China. Heart bypass: $8,000 vs $10,000. For price-sensitive patients, India usually wins.

Where China Wins

Medical technology. Multiple sources — including Bangladeshi medical tourism professionals quoted in industry reports — state that China offers "more advanced healthcare technology" than India. Chinese hospitals invest heavily in the latest equipment: Da Vinci Xi robots, Zeiss lasers, Siemens MRI and CT scanners, proton therapy systems. The hardware at China's top hospitals is genuinely world-leading.

Cancer treatment. China is the clear leader in oncology. CAR-T therapy, proton therapy, and immunotherapy drugs developed in China are attracting patients from around the world. India has good cancer care, but China's capabilities in this area are exceptional.
Speed of access. At China's top hospitals, you can see a specialist within 1–3 days and have surgery within a week. India's private hospitals are also fast, but China's sheer volume of patients per hospital means there's more availability.
Traditional medicine integration. TCM offers a dimension that India's Ayurveda doesn't match for certain conditions — particularly chronic pain, digestive issues, and post-surgery rehabilitation. Some Chinese hospitals seamlessly combine Western and traditional approaches.

Procedure-by-Procedure Recommendations

ProcedureBest ChoiceWhy

Who Should Choose Which?

Choose India if: You're a native English speaker, the procedure involves complex doctor-patient communication, you want the absolute lowest price, or you need a well-established medical tourism ecosystem with minimal friction.

Choose China if: You need cancer treatment (especially CAR-T or proton therapy), you want the most advanced medical technology, you're interested in TCM integration, or you're coming from Southeast Asia or East Asia and prefer shorter travel.

The honest answer: Both countries can deliver excellent medical care at a fraction of Western prices. The right choice depends on your specific medical needs, your comfort with language barriers, and whether you prioritize proven infrastructure (India) or cutting-edge technology (China).
