เฟิ่งหฺวาง (凤凰)

Fenghuang (Phoenix Town) is one of China's most beautiful ancient towns. Its name comes from a legend about two phoenixes that flew over the town and decided to stay. Perched on the banks of the Tuo River in western Hunan, its wooden stilted houses (diaojiaolou) seem to grow out of the water itself.

The Tuo River

The heart and soul of Fenghuang. Take a boat ride along the river — it's the best way to see the stilted houses, the old stone bridges, and the daily life of the local Miao people washing clothes on the riverbanks. At night, the lanterns along the river create a scene that's as romantic as it gets in China.

Miao Minority Culture

Fenghuang sits in the heart of Miao territory. The Miao are one of China's 56 official ethnic groups, known for their elaborate silver jewellery, embroidery, and festivals. Visit a nearby Miao village to see traditional dancing, try sour fish soup, and admire silverwork that's been passed down for generations.

Night Scenery

The town transforms after dark. Thousands of red lanterns light up along the river, bars play live music, and the reflections create a dreamlike atmosphere. Walk across the Rainbow Bridge (Hongqiao) for the best view.

Getting Out of Town

The ancient town itself can get crowded during holidays. For a quieter experience, walk or cycle into the surrounding countryside — rice paddies, small Miao villages, and terraced hillsides await just 15 minutes outside the main gate.
