Shaoxing is the most underrated cultural city in China. It produced more scholars, writers, and revolutionaries than any other Chinese city of its size.
Lu Xun's Hometown
A preserved precinct dedicated to China's most famous modern writer. Visit his childhood home, the Sanwei Study (where he studied as a boy), and the museum. The surrounding streets have been restored to their early 20th-century appearance.
East Lake (Dong Hu)
A beautiful small lake where locals carve the stone cliffs by hand — you take a boat through narrow channels between sheer cliff faces. It's intimate, quiet, and completely unlike the big-name lakes elsewhere in China.
Rice Wine Culture
Shaoxing is the capital of Chinese rice wine (huangjiu). Visit a winery to see how it's made and aged (some vintages are 50+ years old). Try it warmed with a slice of ginger.
Food
Beyond the wine, Shaoxing is famous for: drunken chicken (marinated in rice wine, of course), stinky tofu (the best in China), and meigan cai kou rou (pork belly with pickled vegetables).
