Shenyang is one of the great underrated cities in China. It was the capital of the Qing Dynasty before they moved to Beijing, and it has a fascinating blend of imperial history, heavy industry heritage, and a vibrant food scene.
Mukden Palace (Shenyang Imperial Palace)
The smaller but in some ways more interesting cousin of Beijing's Forbidden City. Built in 1625, it was the home of the Qing emperors before they conquered the rest of China. The Manchu architecture is distinct — more practical, less ornate.
9.18 Historical Museum
A sobering but important museum documenting the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931. The building is shaped like a calendar torn open at September 18.
Zhongjie Street
One of China's oldest commercial streets, now a pedestrian shopping area with great street food. Try the local specialty: dandong fried dumplings.

Shenyang is the heart of Northeast Chinese cuisine — hearty, bold, and warming. Don't miss: dajiang (fermented soybean paste), jiaozi (handmade dumplings), and the city's famous BBQ lamb skewers.
