Pingyao (平遥)
China's best-preserved ancient walled city — step back into the Ming Dynasty
Pingyao is the closest you'll get to time travel in China. Every street, wall, and courtyard has been preserved exactly as it was 600 years ago.
A UNESCO World Heritage site with intact Ming Dynasty city walls, ancient banking houses, and traditional courtyard hotels.
Pingyao is a perfectly preserved Ming Dynasty walled city in Shanxi Province. No cars are allowed inside the old city walls — only bicycles and rickshaws.
The City Wall
One of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China. Walk the full 6km perimeter for views over the old city's grey-tiled rooftops. Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty.
Ancient Banking Houses
Pingyao was China's financial capital during the Qing Dynasty. Visit the Rishengchang Exchange Shop — China's first bank, established in 1823.
Courtyard Hotels
Many of the old merchant mansions have been converted into guesthouses. Stay in a traditional siheyuan (courtyard hotel) for the full experience. The heated kangs (brick beds) are a winter highlight.
Food
Shanxi is famous for its noodles and vinegar. Try: dao xiao mian (knife-cut noodles), pingyao beef (a local specialty), and aged Shanxi vinegar.
