Things to Do in Turpan (吐鲁番)

3 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Turpan's beauty is best experienced outdoors. 3 attractions are absolute must-sees among 5 on my curated list — from iconic landmarks to hidden corners most visitors miss.

Even in just 2 days, you can cover the essentials. Focus on the must-see attractions and grab street food between stops — that's how you really experience Turpan.

1. Jiaohe Ancient Ruins

交河故城

Landmark

A 2,300-year-old Silk Road city carved from earth, abandoned after Mongol invasion. One of China's best-preserved ancient ruins.

2 hoursBest: Early morning (before 10am) — it gets brutally hot
Tips:
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and bring plenty of water
  • The site is exposed with no shade — plan accordingly
  • A guide adds enormous value to understand the layout

2. Flaming Mountains

火焰山

Nature

Red sandstone mountains that glow like fire in the sun — a landscape immortalised in the classic novel Journey to the West.

30 min–1 hourBest: Late afternoon for the red glow
Tips:
  • Best viewed from a distance — the full experience is the vista
  • Don't attempt to hike in summer — surface temps exceed 70°C

3. Grape Valley

葡萄沟

Food

A lush vineyard valley in the desert producing China's best grapes. Walk through shaded trellises and taste fresh raisins.

2 hoursBest: Morning or late afternoon
Tips:
  • Buy fresh raisins as souvenirs — they're the best in China
  • The grape trellises provide excellent shade from the sun
  • Try the local wine — Turpan is a growing wine region

4. Karez Irrigation Museum

坎儿井博物馆

Museum

A museum and entrance to the ancient underground canal system that made life in Turpan possible for 2,000 years.

1 hourBest: Any time (indoor attraction)
Tips:
  • You can walk through a section of the actual underground canal
  • The engineering is genuinely impressive — don't skip this

5. Emin Minaret

苏公塔

Religious

The largest Islamic minaret in China, built in 1778 with distinctive Uyghur brickwork patterns.

30 minBest: Late afternoon for golden light on the brick
Tips:
  • The brick patterns are unique to Uyghur Islamic architecture
  • Combine with a walk through the adjacent mosque

Must-Try Local Food

In Turpan, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Polo (Uyghur Lamb Rice)

抓饭 · ¥20–35

Fragrant rice cooked with lamb, carrots, and cumin — the national dish of Uyghur cuisine.

where Any Uyghur restaurant on Grape Street

Laghman

拉面 · ¥15–25

Uyghur-style hand-pulled noodles with lamb and vegetables in a savoury broth.

where Grape Street Uyghur eateries

Turpan Grapes & Raisins

吐鲁番葡萄 · ¥15–30 per kg

Some of China's finest grapes — famously sweet due to Turpan's unique desert climate and ancient irrigation.

where Grape Valley or local markets

What Travelers Say About Turpan

“

The Silk Road itinerary Peng put together was incredible. Dunhuang, Turpan, Kashgar — places I'd dreamed about but had no idea how to navigate. She arranged local guides who were actual historians. Came back with photos I'll treasure forever.
