กุ้ยหยาง (贵阳)

Guiyang is the unsung hero of Chinese travel. Most people skip it, but they're missing out on incredible food, fascinating minority cultures, and landscapes that rival桂林.

Jiaxiu Tower

The symbol of Guiyang — a Ming Dynasty pavilion built on a bridge in the middle of the Nanming River. It's beautiful at night when it's illuminated. The surrounding park is a popular spot for locals playing music, dancing, and practising calligraphy with water on the pavement.

Qianling Park

A massive urban park built into a forested mountain — rare for a Chinese city. Climb to the top for panoramic views of Guiyang's modern skyline surrounded by karst peaks. The Hongfu Temple inside is Guizhou's most important Buddhist temple. The park is also home to wild monkeys — keep your snacks hidden.

Miao and Dong Villages

Guizhou is home to China's largest populations of Miao and Dong ethnic minorities. The most accessible day trip from Guiyang is to the Xijiang Miao Village (3 hours drive) — a stunning hillside village of wooden stilt houses. The Dong are famous for their 'wind and rain bridges' and polyphonic choir singing. Langde Miao Village and Zhaoxing Dong Village are also excellent options for longer trips.

Huangguoshu Waterfall

China's largest waterfall — 77 metres high and 101 metres wide. It's about 2 hours from Guiyang by bus. You can walk behind the waterfall through a cave — one of those experiences you won't forget. Go after the rainy season (July-August) for maximum water flow.

Sour-Spicy Cuisine

Guizhou cuisine is built around two things: sourness and spiciness. The signature dish is suantang yu (sour fish soup) — fish cooked in a fermented tomato and chilli broth. Other must-tries: huaxi niu rou fen (Huaxi beef noodles), changwang mian (intestine noodles — don't knock it till you try it), and the famous Guizhou chilli sauces that are sold in every market.
