หยางซั่ว (阳朔)

Yangshuo is the heart of the Li River's karst landscape. It's smaller, more relaxed, and far more adventurous than Guilin. If Guilin is the postcard, Yangshuo is the place you actually want to be.

Cycling the Countryside

This is the number one thing to do in Yangshuo. Rent a bicycle or e-bike and head into the countryside. Follow the small lanes between rice paddies, past rural villages, with karst peaks rising on all sides. The route from Yangshuo to Moon Hill (about 8km) is the classic ride — mostly flat, incredibly scenic.

Yulong River Bamboo Rafting

Better than the main Li River cruise. The Yulong River is narrower, quieter, and more intimate. Traditional bamboo rafts (actually bamboo-like plastic now, but traditional in style) float gently downstream through karst scenery. A local boatman poles you along with a bamboo punt. The stretch from Yulong Bridge to the Worker's Bridge is the most scenic.

Rock Climbing

Yangshuo is one of Asia's top rock climbing destinations. The limestone karsts offer hundreds of bolted routes from beginner (5.6) to expert (5.14). Moon Hill is the most famous climb — a hikeable arch for non-climbers and a multi-pitch sport climbing venue for the experienced. For beginners, several schools offer half-day introduction courses.

Moon Hill

A 15-minute cycle from town, Moon Hill is a giant natural arch visible for miles. Climb the 800+ steps to the top for a panoramic view of the surrounding karst landscape. It's sweaty work (do it early morning) but the view from the arch is unforgettable.

West Street (Xi Jie)

Yangshuo's main tourist strip — a 1km pedestrian street lined with restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and climbing gear stores. It's touristy but fun, especially at night when the bars are full and the street food is out.

Xingping Ancient Town

A 30-minute bus ride from Yangshuo, Xingping is an ancient market town on the Li River. The view from the dock — karst peaks reflected in the river — is the one printed on the ¥20 note. Much quieter than Yangshuo town, with cobblestone streets and Ming Dynasty architecture.
