Things to Do in Lhasa (拉萨)

4 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Lhasa is a living museum. Every temple, street, and structure has a story stretching back centuries. I've curated 5 experiences — 4 of them are non-negotiable.

Most visitors spend 3–5 days here. With 4 must-see attractions, I recommend pacing yourself — hit 2–3 per day and leave room for spontaneous discoveries.

1. Potala Palace

布达拉宫

Landmark

Tibet's iconic 13-storey fortress-palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines, and the tombs of eight Dalai Lamas.

2-3 hoursBest: Early morning (first entry slot) for fewer crowds
Tips:
  • Book tickets at least one day in advance — entry is timed and limited
  • The climb is strenuous at 3,650m — take it very slowly
  • No photography inside the chapels
  • Dress respectfully — shoulders and knees covered

2. Jokhang Temple

大昭寺

Religious

The holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism, built in 647 AD, housing the sacred Jowo Shakyamuni statue of the 12-year-old Buddha.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Early morning (before 9am) when pilgrims are most active
Tips:
  • Walk the Barkhor Circuit clockwise before entering
  • The rooftop offers excellent photo views of Potala Palace
  • Avoid visiting during major Buddhist festivals unless you enjoy crowds

3. Barkhor Street

八廓街

Shopping

The pilgrim circuit around Jokhang Temple — one of the most atmospheric streets in the world with spinning prayer wheels, incense, and craft markets.

1-2 hoursBest: Late afternoon for golden light and peak activity
Tips:
  • Walk clockwise — always
  • Bargain respectfully in the market stalls
  • Watch pilgrims prostrating — it's a profound sight
  • Try sweet tea at a rooftop tea house

4. Sera Monastery

色拉寺

Religious

One of Tibet's 'Great Three' Gelug monasteries (founded 1419), famous for the daily Monks' Debate at 3pm.

2 hoursBest: 2pm–3pm to catch the Monks' Debate at 3pm
Tips:
  • The Monks' Debate at 3pm is a must-see — arrive early for a good spot
  • The Buddha statues in the main temple hall are exquisite
  • The hike up the hill behind the monastery has great views

5. Norbulingka

罗布林卡

Park

The Dalai Lama's former summer palace — a peaceful park with gardens, pavilions, and beautifully preserved murals.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Afternoon, when the Potala crowds are largest
Tips:
  • A great escape from the intensity of the city centre
  • The murals inside the palace buildings are exquisite

Must-Try Local Food

In Lhasa, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Tibetan Momos

藏包子 · ¥15–25

Steamed dumplings filled with yak meat, onion, and ginger — Tibet's most beloved comfort food.

where Barkhor Street restaurants

Thenthuk

面疙瘩 · ¥15–25

Hand-pulled Tibetan noodle soup with vegetables and yak meat — perfect for cold high-altitude evenings.

where Local Tibetan restaurants near Jokhang Temple

Yak Meat with Barley Bread

糌粑配牦牛肉 · ¥20–35

Roasted highland barley flour (tsampa) mixed with yak meat — a traditional Tibetan staple eaten by hand.

where Tibetan family-run restaurants
