ผิงเหยา (平遥)

Pingyao is a perfectly preserved Ming Dynasty walled city in Shanxi Province. No cars are allowed inside the old city walls — only bicycles and rickshaws.

The City Wall

One of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China. Walk the full 6km perimeter for views over the old city's grey-tiled rooftops. Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty.

Ancient Banking Houses

Pingyao was China's financial capital during the Qing Dynasty. Visit the Rishengchang Exchange Shop — China's first bank, established in 1823.

Courtyard Hotels

Many of the old merchant mansions have been converted into guesthouses. Stay in a traditional siheyuan (courtyard hotel) for the full experience. The heated kangs (brick beds) are a winter highlight.

Food

Shanxi is famous for its noodles and vinegar. Try: dao xiao mian (knife-cut noodles), pingyao beef (a local specialty), and aged Shanxi vinegar.
